One of the toughest sports in the world is Water Polo; it requires skills, speed and plenty of stamina. Water Polo is a team water sport which consist of six field players and one goal keeper, it has similarities to  the land-based game of team handball. This game involves swimming and treading using “eggbeater kick” -sort of a kicking motion. Water Polo began in the late 19th century in England and Scotland. Each team consist of seven players and up to six substitutes with a water polo ball similar in size to a soccer ball but constructed of waterproof nylon. The rules of water polo were originally developed in Great Britain by William Wilson. Team players  allowed brute strength, wrestling and holding opposing players underwater to recover the ball; the goalie stood outside the playing area and defended the goal by jumping in on any opponent attempting to score by placing the ball on the deck.

One of the oldest and the most popular water polo team is the Pro Recco, which made up the spine of the Italian team that won gold in front of their home fans at the 1960 Olympics. Pro Recco has dominated Italian Water Polo since the late fifties, winning 26 national championships, eight Italian Cups and seven European Champions League titles. The Team  is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.
